Willows (salix taxa)

Willows are amongst the worst wetland weeds in temperate Australia and are listed as Weeds of National Significance. They currently occupy thousands of kilometres of rivers, streams and off stream wetlands from sea level to alpine regions.

Dispersal is by vegetative means (fragmented stems) and by wind-borne seeds which enables them to be dispersed over great distances.

Willows threaten to destroy bio-diversity of invaded sites by growing both in the watercourse and on the banks of streams. Willows cause channel diversion, soil and bank erosion, loss of stream capacity as well as increased flooding and loss of infrastructure such as bridges etc. Secondary effects are water pollution from falling leaves and loss of indigenous species of flora & fauna.

For more information on Willows see www.weeds.org.au or www.nre.vic.gov.au.

Previous Experience:

Over the past 7 years we have worked on clearing large areas of Willow Infestation in the Bacchus Marsh area for the Moorabool Shire Council with most satisfactory results, and more recently for Corangamite CMA from Ballarat to the Otways.

After many years working in this field we now offer a "whole project" solution for river rehabilitation.

If you would like to discuss our work completed to date with Allan May, Environmental Officer for Moorabool Shire he may be contacted on Mobile 0408 572 678 or Darren Cottam, River Health Officer at Corangamite CMA on Mobile 0429 959 234

Whole Project Solutions:

We can offer a "one stop" service, eliminating downtime waiting for other contractors to provide machinery and sevices. We will work the project from start to finish, and as we own all our own machinery when we leave, you are ready for replanting with the mulch already on site to assist you.

    • we will "frill & kill" trees at onset of project
    • manually cut trees to allow selective falling
    • Wood Chip as much debris as possible and stockpile for future replanting needs
    • Burn-off stockpiles of remnant logs and stumps (where conditions permit)
    • Spray remaining area for weeds prior to replanting
    • Reinstate area
